The Grand Canyon Bibliography:  A Historical Record of Events, Activities, and Interests in the 16th-21st Centuries

This is the first comprehensive bibliography specifically devoted to the greater Grand Canyon region. It embraces the Grand Canyon of the Colorado River in Arizona, the region around it, aspects of the river and the Colorado Plateau that are fundamental contributions to the Grand Canyon record, and accounts that prove the exceptional worldwide interest in the Grand Canyon based on encounters as early as 1540 (though published record of that encounter awaited centuries).  The bibliography is presented in 32 subject-specific parts, in one volume.

The Introduction provides a concise history of the development of this bibliography, from 1974 to 2026, with thoughts on its future.

The bibliography traces its beginnings to 1974, when the first citations were compiled toward what was intended to be the first truly comprehensive bibliography for the Grand Canyon. That intention was not realized. When published in 1981, it had been geographically expanded to encompass all of the Colorado River country between Glen Canyon Dam and the Gulf of California. Later editions would enlarge the work even further geographically, to embrace the region surrounding the culturally, geologically, and ecologically related Salton Sea (once naturally refilled by the Colorado River, but most recently refilled accidentally through human misintervention early in the 20th century), the associated Imperial and Mexicali Valleys in southern California (U.S.) and Baja California (Mexico), and the environment of the Colorado River delta and the adjacent part of the Gulf of California. The first edition in 1981 contained fewer than 4,000 citations. By 2025, the bibliography had grown to a nearly unmanageable 111,300, followed by the first edition of a Cumulative Supplement (2026) that records more than 2,400 additional items.

"The Grand Canyon Bibliography" extracts from the larger bibliography, with reformatted citations for better readability, and added annotations.

Yet even in 2025 there still was no comprehensive bibliography given exclusively to the Grand Canyon region. The present bibliography remedies this deficit.
